Do we remember the kind of portfolio that we used to have with a thick of papers, tremendous ink is use, flipping one by one to look at one another in a big file and a big space to save all of them? I think the presence of e-portfolio will help us to make our life easier and systematic. Oh! I forgot.

What is e-portfolio? E-portfolio is a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user, usually on the Web (also called Webfolio). Such electronic evidence may include inputted text, electronic files, images, multimedia, blog entries, and hyperlinks. E-portfolios are both demonstrations of the user's abilities and platforms for self-expression, and, if they are online, they can be maintained dynamically over time. Some e-portfolio applications permit varying degrees of audience access, so the same portfolio might be used for multiple purposes.

Unlike traditional portfolio, students have been taught to create digital identities using presentation software or tools to create web pages. Such technologies, however, are not easily utilized by children or elderly people who lack web authoring skills or a hosted site. More recently the use of virtual learning environments (VLEs) in schools and universities has led to an increased activity in the creation of e-portfolios for a variety of reasons. Most of these e-portfolios, however, are retained within the VLE and are not easily accessed outside the VLE. This results in problems of exporting data and related interoperability issues. An alternative approach is to use a system externally hosted to any institution. This permits transition through the various stages of education and employments and even into retirement.

But both e-portfolio and traditional portfolio has something in common, both can facilitate students' reflection on their own learning, leading to more awareness of learning strategies and needs.

One day, I hope all the primary kids in Malaysia have the opportunities to access this amazing portfolio in a way to enhance their learning, skills, high order thinking skills and etc. :)

what people says about technology...

The kids that don't necessarily star can become the stars. [with technology]. My favorite is this boy . . . who had major problems at home. He figured out a way to make music by getting the computer to play certain letters by certain powers and it changed the musical tone of the note and he actually wrote a piece. He stayed in every recess. . . . When I asked him what he was working on, he wouldn't tell me. Then he asked if he could put his HyperCard stack on my computer because it was hooked up to speakers. I said "sure" and at recess. . . he put it on my computer and played his music and literally stopped the room. And for months he had kids begging him at recess, every recess, to teach them how to make music. And for that particular kid it was the world because he really was not successful academically and was having lots of problems. . . . This really changed him for that school year.

~Elementary school teacher

Soon silence will have passed into legend. Does everybody know about it? Honestly, I just get to know it now. :) SchoolNet is implemented by GITN Sdn. Berhad, a wholly owned subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia Berhad & A national project in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications and the Ministry of Education. SchoolNet works parallel to Government’s vision to bridge the digital divide among students in urban, rural and remote areas to establish Malaysian as an information-based society. Its objective is to boost the effectiveness of the local education system. SchoolNet provides the infrastructure and technological assitance needed for 10,000 schools throughout the country. There’s a lot of advantages of using SchoolNet such as it helps you to see the world beyond your school books whether it’s Science, History, Mathematics, English, or any other subjects, you can access from the computer all the exciting and interesting information you never knew before and so on..

I was thinking of the school that I had visited before; it’s an urban school in Kuala Lumpur. It’s well equipped with computers (in the computer lab) and internet. Wow! – I cried. The computer lab is quite big and comfortable. Unfortunately, I rarely seen the usage of the computer lab. I mean the pupils there are afraid to go there without the teachers’ assistance or they are warned not to do that. (Perhaps, the teachers are afraid of vandalism). When I was there, my friend and I want to conduct activities but integration of technology requires us to use computer lab. We have permission to do that. The pupils (if you can see their face) are extremely happy! They boost out with enjoyment!

Pupils: “Cikgu, Cikgu, betol ke kita nak pergi makmal komputer?”

Teacher: “Ye, kenapa?”

Pupils: “Seronoknyeee… :)”

Teacher: *blank!
I believe that the use of SchoolNet or computers can help enhance teaching and learning. Perhaps, pupils nowadays still have a gap with computers and may be their family does not afford to have computers at home. School is the right place. My suggestion is, get a person in charge to take care of the computer lab (to avoid vandalism) and pupils have the opportunity to go there anytime that they want (not only when it times to certain subjects that requires them to use computer). Give them the authority power and indirectly, this will encourage them to be responsible for their own learning.

TV Pendidikan?

Rancangan TV Pendidikan disiarkan pada hari Isnin hingga Khamis pada jam 9.00 pagi hingga 5.00 petang. When you write, people can read what you are doing and what you are experiencing with. But I was totally wrong. Completely wrong. I wish somebody introduce me about this thingy thing when I was still a small small kid. Its fun! Rather than wasting your time by doing unbeneficial things, im sure that this is the best therapy for people like me. Luckily this course requires me to write blogs and it’s compulsory. That’s make me addicted to this online diary. Yeah. Its like a diary. My diary on what happen in the class and what I’ve learnt throughout this semester.

Blogging thought me to be creative in delivering my message and my experiences too. I should be a good planner. To not confusing people and to make my message successfully delivered, I should be a good planner in arranging the inputs. The same thing goes to primary kids. I think they should be introduced to blogging as it provides concrete experiences and a lot more to say. Don’t afraid of critisms teachers, sometime you need to hear what the inner heart of a child tries to say, if he is not dares to say it in front of you, he can do it, here. That’s a good thing either, for you teachers, to improve your teaching skills. Sometimes you have to learn from somebody else because all of us, are not perfect.

I wish people outside there have the opportunity to read what I had written on my BlogSpot. I wish that people will appreciate what I have written here. I wish out of thousand people will be able to gain knowledge from my writings. I wish they can share with their family members, friends, peers or colleagues. I wish they could know me because I’m doing this not for the sake of money but for my passion of writing. I hope that the growing number of people visiting my page will increase from the value of 0 to 00. I hope people will say this to me one day, “Thank You”. But upon all, I want to Thank You to my lecture, Prof Maznah and all the tutors who let this become real. Thank You. =)

S.M.I.L.E :)

wake up teachers! I was squeezing myself to get more adorable pictures and relevant to my topic. More and more! Credit to Yahoo and Google, they are a lot of materials that I want is there. Using smart board is not that difficult if we have blue print on what we are going to do. Learning Objectives is important. Once you know your learning objectives, you’ll absolutely get the ideas sketched in your head.
Beyond all, I think smart board is really an astute, shrewd or anything that you want to name it, it deserves it. it’s just like a transformers of a blackboard but come in greater package for students. Blackboard is just there, a thing that pasted stiffly on the wall but smart board it just like a robot in which students can interact with it. Pupils on my own understanding, they like something that lively and related to their schemata- absolutely! Smart board is the answer.

*p/s: following the guidelines, I think my smart board activities is not that damn cute but adorable for Year 3 kids. :p

a successful FISH!

Prof Maznah was holding a plastic toy fish. then she started to to threw it to the audience (us). there are many of them. she threw it one by one. then she asked those who hold the fish to throw to one another. Suddenly, "Dush!" followed by "Ouch!" i cried- the plastic toy fish was thrown to me. everyone enjoyed it. we are awake. the laughs stopped. the serious took place. Prof introduced us to FISH! Philosophy. it sounds weird. obviously, it has nothing to do with the plastic toy fish. :) it was my first time to hear it. the definition of FISH! philosophy can be described as a skill that provides the process, tools, language to generate the skills necessary to design a workplace full of inspiration, creativity and innovation. only 4 simple practices- Be there, Play, Make Their Day and Chose Your Attitude. Your day will be boost out of fun and enjoy atmosphere!

FISH! philosophy also invites us to re-awaken our self-trusting and creative spirit within each of us. This is essential for us who work in the same field and face the same audience each day. from FISH!, we can build a very strong character building and the element of creative should be cultivated in within as we deal with same phases of children and the progression of these 21st children each day is unpredictable. it can be slow or tremendous fast. so we as teachers have to be creative and innovative in our teaching and learning strategies rather than using the same strategy everyday. we can make the difference if we want an active learners compare to passive objects. i assume, many people will think that technology can do a magic on children's learning and make them successful learners. yet, they are not successful if we teachers behaving like stone. For instance, smartboard or iwb. it is an astute board. but it is not astute if we teachers, or the engineer did not utilize it to the maximum. children nowadays are media aware and the teaching and learning lesson will be a no no if we teachers do not be creative and innovative!

The FISH! philosophy doesn't have a fixed time of duration. no datelines as well. it's an on-going process or continuous journey. everyday it inspires you to start a new conversations about what is possible and to develop a new attitudes about how you show up in your community both at home and it the work place. to us, the future teachers, we have to have the passion to our job and keep updated ourselves with the latest change in the education world. the keyword is determination. we are the anchor, who determines the path of the ship to the final destination. if we let our children to play the same records everyday, they will be not be productive and our learning objectives could not be achieved. i hope all teachers in this world are exposed to this ultimate FISH! and create a new metamorphosis in the world of education.
Dear all teachers, be brave to make a change, don't spoil the future.

*p/s: the FISH! philosophy also came out in many versions and the latest books that closely related to education is Schools of FISH! i was so surprised. i was so eager to know what is happened to that little girl. i was then ask another teacher to give me some explanations. Autism. yeah, the girl is an autism. from what i understood, this girl likes to be in her own world, drawing, singing and because her IQ is quite excellent, the school placed her in that class. Oh! day by day, i tried my best to interrupt her and on the last day, she gave me a card with a power puff drawings in it- that's was her best drawing! i smiled to her. i never had this wonderful present. :)

"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops"

~Henry Brooks Adams

the innocent present

"Mrs. Thompson and Teddy"

Her name was Mrs. Thompson and his was 'Teddy'.
As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same.
But that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.
Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. And Teddy could be unpleasant.
It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big "F" at the top of his papers.
At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.
Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners ... he is a joy to be around."
His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle."
His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death had been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken."
Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class".
By now, Mrs Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents.
Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one quarter full of perfume. But she stifled the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist.
Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, "Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to." After the children left she cried for at least an hour.
On that very day, she quit teaching reading, and writing, and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children.
Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her "teacher's pets."
A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.
Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he'd stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs.Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had in his whole life.
Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and favourite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer - The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, MD.
The story doesn't end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he'd met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit in the place at the wedding that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom. Of course, Mrs Thompson did.
And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. And she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together. They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs.Thompson's ear, "Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference."
Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, "Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn't know how to teach until I met you."

a teacher of 21st century

i've been 4 years in my study to become a teacher. i thought it was a dream. time running so fast. but i still hesitate whether i can be a good or bad teacher. i should learn more. i should read more. but teachers nowadays need not to be worried. there's lots of preferences that they can gain from the net. all information is there with just a click. since Prof. Maznah is away, the tutor conducted the lecture. it was on local links on ICT. i was surprised. i never thought that they are so many websites which designed specially for educators i.e. eduwebtv.com, Cikgu.net, ETeMs and BTP. i think the idea of having websites are so great. it can make all the teachers unite and give ideas towards certain things in very fast mode. children nowadays are growing maturely and intelligently more than we are expected them to be. perhaps, the teachers can't rely on the old method of teaching. the progression of pupils seemed to be advanced each and everyday. i think teachers should utilize the usage of these websites to plan, devise and discuss the teaching method to suit the 21st century learners. besides that, there are so many issues on teachers in school which have been attacked by most parents recently. i don't think that we should blame the teacher 100%. maybe it was due to certain circumstances which can't be avoided. to teachers, use all the websites above to clear things and be a responsible teacher to our precious generation. with technology, we can unite.

leaping into the foundations

our class today was completely top-up with theories and models. yeah. i think we should have this too as theories provide the foundation layer before we go further in this course. the models which have been introduced to us were ADDIE, ASSURE and Dick & Carey Models. ADDIE is short for Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. while, ASSURE is short for Analyze Learners, State Objectives, Select Methods, Media and Materials, Utilize Media and Materials, Require Learner Participation and Evaluate and Revise. can you see the similarities between those two? both has its own explanation that starts with letters. maybe i should start thinking of designing my own model. ASMA. :) by the way, the three models are very useful to me, as a future teacher. all the models mentioned are designed purposely from analyzing learners until evaluating learners. from all the three, i prefer Dick & Carey Model. Even though the model has been to old, 1985, but i prefer to use it.* if i were to use it later. this is because the model provide us with a very crystal clear steps that we should take into consideration while designing a course. it starts with identify instructional goals until develop and conduct Formative & Summative Evaluation. the whole process i would say, PERFECT! but i'm not saying that ADDIE and ASSURE Model is not good. they are delivering the same content and worth to use too. if you are interested, you can check out these links:

http://www.instructionaldesign.org/models/dick_carey_model.html
http://www.mscd.edu/~act2/courseconstruct/assure.html
http://ed.isu.edu/addie/index.html

Mike the monster

Current mood: Cheers :)

lastly, the 3-minutes video has been released in youtube for about weeks ago. the video entitled Mike the monster. i have fun in doing it. from the title, you absolutely think that the video is about life of Mike who is the monster or Mike is a human who turns to be a monster or any expectations that you have. whatever it is, the video is purposely to teach colours. like a mineral water, you won't taste anything extraordinary without added some flavour in it. there goes my video, i added some values of friendship and anti-racism to make the video worth to watch. too heavy for kids? i don't think so. for me, kids are innocent and they need to be exposed as the values will appear to be prominent for them as they grow ups. not to forget, to Kak Niza and Syazwan, thanks for helping me a lot in the making of the video. tq! talk about comments, i have received few and here are they..

From amiziey: asma..the video is really fun! and i recognize your voice, very kiut..haha.. you can use this video in the future..and i want a copy for my teaching aid one day...hee :) (me- amy, you can download straight from youtube. huhu :)

From kasgovind: hei asma...very interesting video.Children would love it! (me- tq! arigatok!)

From xgeemoshx: friend make us happy..hehehh (me- let us be friends!)

From missekin: comel!huhu (me-for your information, i put lots of efforts in drawing and colouring..)

From smellopillo: say no to racism. (me- yeah, you are right smellopillo. actually the saying "so kids, let us be friend no matter what colour we are, is referring to your statement. :)

From checkgu: puppets!!cute!! (me- puppets is the last resort as i really have no ideas to play with animations)

From samadpencen: great vids! (me- tq! i chose to redo if given chances. hehe)

From HeArToFzHaRa: beshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........ (me- tq soooooooooo much!!!)

From yourpnkrock: kanak-kanak pasti sukakannya. :) congratulations! (me- i hope the same too.. :)

From mkomathi: well done asma...its a great video. i'm sure kids will luv it. (me- thanks a lot komathi. yours is great too!)

eager to watch, click on the link below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VD-_TaCXlno

yeay! happy watching and thanks for reading!

the author,
Nur Asma Abd Somad

the antagonist sides of a 3-minutes video

Mood: Tired and sleepy

i’m quite busy right now because of the 3-minutes video and the date due seems to calling me dead. Oh.. so tired. I’ve been working on it over the week and still in the process of editing. I feel like a techno goddess. Everyday my life starts with a click on my laptop, a glance on the internet till present changes to tomorrow. huh. Initially, I planned to change my topic from Monster to Paper making because I found it hard to play with Monsters and do magic on it. I mean animation. After all, I realized that I don’t have enough time to collect data and do research on paper making. So, I decided to continue with my 1st draft and put lots of efforts in drawing and colouring! (credit to Ms Ng). The 3-minutes video also makes my circle of everyday life doesn’t seem to work efficiently, my brain can’t think of anything else except the 3-minutes video, my eating habits become disorder, my chatting life disrupted and focused only on the topic of Monsters, my social life seemed to stop immediately, my shopping time has been deleted by the author, my room becomes messy with buncho colour, tissues, marker pens and paint brushes, and my sleeping time extended from 12 a.m to 2 p.m. all because of the 3-minutes video. =)

the author,
Nur Asma Abd Somad

technology is a secretary

technology?hurm... lets me share you a little bit of mine. i’ve been exposed to PC when i was in primary school. yeah. that’s the only techno supposed to be at that time. but, you know, rural areas school, i don’t have such much experienced to explore those gadget in details. I remembered the day my late teacher introduced me to a PC, and it’s just that. nothing. we still used black board and chalks until I choked. :)

Imagine these two situations perhaps they can give you the idea on how technology developed…

Situation 1 (year 1995):
Teacher: an old teacher drives a Nissan Sunny car, walking to a 5 Mawar class, wearing huge and thick glasses, less make-up,loads of books,no techno attached, blabbering from 7.30 a.m to 1.30 p.m. daily dialogue, “Ok class, open your text book, page 12”, “Ok class, open your exercise book A, if wrong, do 100 times correction”- said the teacher.
Pupil: ride a bicycle and bring a heavy duty bag (just like a tourist)

can you imagine how dramatic my school was? uhh.. I’m not portrayed all the teachers in that era were like that, but I think, as a student, with techno, it can help primary kids to move out from a typical learning style to fun and enjoyable learning. =)

Situation 2 (year 2020):
a young teacher walking to a 5 Bestari class, wearing fresh-look contact lens, tans of make-up, vincci high-heels and no blabbering because the speakers do all the talkings from 7.30a.m to 1.30p.m. daily dialogue, “Ok class, close your notebook and pay attention to the smartboard” “Ok class, send me the answers tonight to my email”- said the teacher.
pupils: bring notebook, together with tiny and latest handphone.

Anyway, it’s just my imagination. i mean if technology takes places too much in the classroom, teachers may misuse it. As future teachers, we can’t dependent on technology merely; we still have to combine the traditional method of teaching with technology. So that it will be balanced.

but, do primary kids nowadays knew about this? how lucky they are to be born in the era of techno? and we teachers have to slave ourselves in this course just to provide them with variety teaching aids, with and with bombastic techno? uhh… i think they should thanks us for becoming techno-power-teachers. hik. hik.

the first thing that appears in my mind, and what i called it technology in the classroom is powerpoint! yeah. i do think that's the only "techno" which suitable for primary school kids. but hey dummy, there are more than that. you are too behind the times. now we have smart board and lots of soft ware which scaffold primary kids so much. I have to learn it later..

erm.. primary school kids?.. i think they will love technology if they are exposed to it. i know there are many pros and cons, dos and don’ts in technology, but, forget about it, let’s look in positive ways. Through powerpoint, animated video, they'll love visual presentation as it eye-catching, big, colourful and yeah, interesting. i don’t know how to describe more bout techno as I’m just jump into it and still don’t know how to swim. I wish I can swim freely, independently in the sea of techno and follow the stream as the world evolves at the end of this course. i wish. With techno, everything is in your hands (wah! sounds like celcom advertisement) hehe. Yeah.

Agree with me when I said technology is a secretary for teachers?

the author,
Nur Asma Abd Somad
